In the fast-paced world of automotive innovation, one project stands out as a testament to engineering excellence and meticulous validation: Software HIL Validation on dSpace project. Led by our expert engineer Damien Poulet and his dedicated team, this ambitious endeavor has achieved remarkable milestones, including over 13,000 hours of work, more than 380 validated requirements, and over 330 test cases written.

The challenge: validation in a dSpace environment

Launched in 2021 with just two consultants, this project quickly evolved into a significant challenge for the Test House team at Technology and Strategy (T&S). As validation experts, the team was tasked with verify the diagnostic feature of the automotive streering system. This feature is is used to allow the system's status to be consulted, calibrated, and monitored—essential for effective communication with the control unit.

What is dSpace? dSpace is a simulation environment used for designing and testing mechatronic control systems. It allows engineers to simulate and validate complex systems in a virtual environment before physical prototyping.

Comprehensive project management

The dSpace project exemplifies comprehensive project management, from planning to execution. The T&S team handled every aspect, including:

- Requirements review and validation: ensuring, through meticulous walkthrough that the requirements meet the quality criteria defined within the project and standards.

- Training staff: ensuring the team was equipped with the necessary skills.

- Executing tests: conducting thorough testing to validate the system's functionality.

With over a decade of experience in various testing environments, the team successfully adapted to the project's specific needs, leveraging their expertise to deliver outstanding results.

Long-term partnership with Bosch

A crucial factor in the project's success was the long-term partnership with Bosch. A Bosch employee was dedicated to the T&S team for the first six months, facilitating a smooth onboarding process. This collaboration allowed T&S to enhance its expertise in the dSpace environment and support Bosch testers in the technical concepts behind Diagnostic Services (DID, RID).

Diagnostic services (DID, RID):

- DID (Diagnostic Identification): Unique identifiers for diagnostic services.

- RID (Routine Identification): Identifiers for specific routines within diagnostic services.

Why dSpace for Diagnostic Testing?

While other platforms like Vector might seem better suited for diagnostic testing, dSpace was chosen for its ability to provide a single environment for testing the entire steering system. This includes not only diagnostic functionality but also steering functions, network communication, and system power control. Despite some limitations in diagnostic testing, dSpace proved to be an excellent choice for this comprehensive approach.

The future of the dSpace project

After three years of dedicated effort, the T&S team has acquired valuable expertise that will be instrumental in future projects. The next steps include:

- Developing high-quality training material: creating a training program on dSpace automation tailored to the automotive steering sector.

- ISTQB training course: offering an in-house training course to bring all testers up to expert level, aligning with the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) standards.

An agile project: pushing the boundaries of innovation

The dSpace project is a shining example of the T&S team's excellence in automotive testing. By adopting an Agile approach, the team demonstrated its ability to adapt to complex environments and deliver high-quality results. The project's success has laid the foundation for future innovations in automotive testing.

Agile approach: a methodology that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and iterative development to deliver high-quality results quickly.

Stay Tuned for More...

As the dSpace project concludes, the team looks forward to new challenges and opportunities. Stay tuned for updates on our technical adventures and upcoming training courses that will further enhance our expertise in automotive testing.
